Stop #1: L.A. Center for Enriched Studies (5931 W. 18th Street, just west of Fairfax):
Many years ago, this Los Angeles Unified School District secondary school gained a reputation as much more than a public college prep school. It is defined by its combined diversity and student success with its exceptionally high academic indicators that include reading proficiency, AP scores, and college readiness (over 80%). It continued with high rankings into 2020 as the 11th best high school in the state. Recent statistics (posted in 2020) also reflect the balanced diversity theme that helped make it famous: 32% Latino, 27% White, 21% Black, and 18% Asian. Fifty seven percent of the students were from economically disadvantaged families. This public school is known for its high expectations of students that are educated and prepared to compete and succeed in a multicultural L.A., California, and world. The young people graduating from this model high school could represent bright beacons of light in a promising multicultural future.
